The decision by Boris Johnson to appoint his Brexit negotiator, David Frost, as the new National Security Adviser has caused much wailing and gnashing of teeth in the Westminster bubble. Just a quick comment before I begin to say that, even if the whole government, parliament and the EU wanted a Brexit extension, it’s too late to do it now. Even though the deadline technically runs until, I think, 11 pm tonight, there are too many UK law changes that would need to be made, involving votes in the Houses of Commons and Lords in order to achieve it. That’s all now over. Anyway, even though David Frost, or ‘Frosty’ as he is known by, has been a fully fledged civil servant and an ambassador, the ‘establishment’ is up in arms at his appointment as the new National Security Adviser to replace Sir Mark Sedwill. So Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings must be doing something right then.
