Sixty pupils from St Peter the Apostle High School gave up their Saturday nights for most of last year and and volunteered at two of Scotland’s most deprived homeless shelters. The pupils teamed up with The Mother Teresa Missionaries in Pollok to help out at The Bellgrove Hotel and The Salvation Army men’s hostel in Glasgow’s Gallowgate. They turned up with bags of food and old clothes to give to the men and started to listen to their stories, some of them hearing about drug abuse, poverty and deprivation for the first time. Deeply affected by what they saw and heard, the youngsters decided to do more and within weeks had donations coming from relatives, parishes, parents’ workplaces, all school year groups, teachers and support staff. They get so much that now a minibus full of goods accompanies the pupils on their visits to the hostels.
