Brexit and the European Union in Historical Context
In this video, I'll be discussing the origins of some of the ideas behind European political integration, from 1464-2000, in the hope of putting the British vote to leave the European Union into its proper historical context. Rather than relying on the often lazy, ahistorical and generally inadequate explanations offered by journalists, (globalisation, immigration etc.) I'll approach this topic as a historian. We'll consider questions such as: what ideas were behind the EU and where did they originate? Why did Euroscepticism thrive in the UK and integrationist ideas on the continent? How were such ideas informed? Only by exploring these themes in their historical context can we gain an accurate and nuanced interpretation of the result of the 2016 referendum and the impending triggering of Article 50.
